Subject: Bates 1862: An historic paper
Subject: Bates 1862: An historic paper
In this paper Bates first proposed the sort of animal mimicry that bears his name today: Batesian mimicry.
The butterfly taxomony is difficult for us today because we recognize Ithomiinae as a separate nymphalid subfamily. Basically, Bates found resounding similarities between Dismorphinae (Pieridae) and Ithomiinae. He reasoned that the Ithomiinae were the models.
If Bates had done nothing else in his long and productive life aside from his discovery, he would still be justly famous.
